A demo by Yann LeCun of the world’s first application of convolutional neural network for text/ handwriting recognition. LeCun’s implementation set the standards for today’s computer vision and image processing applications.
This was done in 1993 (yes, 30 YEARS ago!) and considered impossible back in time.
The algorithms behind today’s AI revolution have been in existence for decades and it’s quite fascinating to see that the approach to computer vision has not fundamentally evolved since then.
